I hope you are all having a wonderful summer! I have been relaxing, reading, swimming, spending time with family and friends, and working on stuff for the classroom. Summer is the perfect time to work on school stuff right? LOL Anyway, I have spent many years trying to keep up with students where abouts. I came across this idea on pinterest. I bought all the supplies at Walmart. I used a dry erase/magnetic board that was with the calendars. You could use a flat cookie sheet also. I bought green and blue magnets and painted numbers on them. (My students will all be assigned a number for the school year) I used hot glue to glue the ribbon and the places on. I laminated the places first just in case I wanted to change them out. The students will move their number to the location on the board that they are visiting. I am looking forward to seeing how this works this year! Let me know if you have any questions!
fantastic idea! thanks for sharing
This is sooooo cute! I made one up last week -not as cute but for daily lunch choice. I used small one inch tiles and glued magnets to them. I also use numbers for students printed off on 1/2 inch round labels. I tried the Command picture holders to mount this on a cupboard door – hope it holds. Now that I have seen yours I think I might go back and add some more “color” to my board!!
I seriously need one of these — did you get the magnets at Wal-Mart, too? This is SO adorable.
Yes, I got everything from Walmart. Let me know if you need any more help or have any questions!
What DEPARTMENT did you find the magnets? I looked all over the place, and couldn’t find any. Thanks!
I love this idea! I picked up the cookie sheet & ribbon, but I’m having a hard time finding similar magnets. I tried Hobby Lobby, but no luck. What did you use for the labels?
I typed them on the computer then printed then on green paper.
I made two of these for my classroom, as I have both sections of 5th grade throughout the day. They don’t look nearly as nice as these! I used a cookie sheet, and every hot glue string stuck to it, and when I tried to pick them off, they just smeared. It doesn’t look pretty, but I think it’ll be handy! I couldn’t find small magnets at Walmart, but I found some at Target in their office supply section.
I’m transitioning from 8th grade to teaching 5th grade. Do you think this work with them?
I don’t see why not. Ive taught second grade for ten years, so I don’t know much about any other grade. Let me know!
Absolutely! I teach 4th grade and I’m positive this will help me! With the group of students I had last year, I had so many that were in ELL, SpEd, Speech and Title that this will totally help! I LOVE this idea! Thank you SO much!!!
You are very welcome!
great idea. Maybe each child can customize their magnet as well….
Great idea!!!
I’m thinking this would also be great for a specialist that works with many small groups through out the week. It’s hard for me to keep track of what students come from whose classroom. I would need larger magnets for the student’s name. Maybe I can do printable magnets?
What a wonderful idea. If you printed the names on cardstock then laminated them, that should work.
I have made one due to seeing this on pinterest. I was wondering how you connected the ribbon to the cookie sheet. I feel like it’s too heavy for a ribbon to hold.
I didn’t use a cookie sheet. Walmart had silver dry erase board on the calendar isle. It’s very light weight. I used hot glue to glue it down.
What a GREAT idea! I’ve used a sign out sheet for my class so I see their times, but I’ve always wanted a visual of where the kids are. Thanks for sharing!
Where did you find your magnets?
Walmart
This is SOOO wonderful! Thank you so much for such a fabulous idea! I made one of my own based on your post! Thanks again!!
Love this! Did you glue the ribbon that actually hangs the board or are there holes somewhere? I just didn’t know (if you glued it) how well it held up! Thanks!
I glued it. The kids have been really good about moving their number and it’s holding up well!
I LOVE this! So cute! I took their picture, cut them out in small round circle and added a magnet on the back. I know that I will need to make their pictures each year, but I can reuse the magnet. This way a sub (or myself) won’t have to think now whose number is that or look it up. Thank you again!
What size magnetic dry erase board did you use for student whereabouts sign?
Love this idea! What size is the board?
I’m not going to use numbers, but rather alphabet letters. I bet Scrabble letters w9oulod work well once you attach a magnet to them! Thanks for the idea.
I made one and used double side stick tape instead of a glue gun for the ribbon. It worked great.
